Description of Project :

The main objective of this research is to improve the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) module by tracking and regulating the module to operate at the maximum power operating voltage under various environmental conditions. The solar module efficiency is affected by both the mechanical tilt angle and the environmental effects such as solar irradiance, temperature and shaded conditions. Due to the dynamic and rapid changes of the environmental effects, the PV module is usually not operated at the maximum power point (MPP). Thus, perturb and observe (P&O) type of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is introduced to track the PV optimal voltage. However, the conventional MPPT using small perturbation voltage size enlarge the computation cost for the optimal voltage tracking. On the other hand, increasing the perturbation voltage size may lead to the power fluctuation problem and difficulties of locating the exact maximum point. In this research, fuzzy logic control with variable perturbation voltage size is embedded in P&O MPPT for faster PV optimal voltage tracking as well as maintaining the power stability. In addition, extensive study shows that partially shaded PV array with MPPT may cause the PV array trapped at the local MPP. Therefore, initial voltage tracking function is implemented to instruct the MPPT to track beyond the trapped MPP and search for the absolute maximum power operating voltage. Modelling of PV module, PV array and Computation of Fuzzy MPPT algorithm are developed in MATLAB m-file and linked to MATLAB SIMULINK via S-function. Evaluations and assessments have been carried out through simulation and results shown that fuzzy logic based P&O MPPT having better performance for tracking the optimal voltage faster and minimizing the power fluctuation responding to the various environmental effects.
